Values and Valuing

Taken October 5, 2014
I haven’t been writing [insert usual work-overload excuses here], but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been out to the site regularly. At least once a week and sometimes twice. Since the end of September, the house has been roofed, complete with shingles.

Taken October 18, 2014,
an overcast day
We had to do some quick decision-making on Tuesday, October 7th. Over the weekend, the builder said he needed our siding and shingle choices. Sunday and Monday, I tried playing with the colors available on the Certainteed website. They have a “design center” which suffers from every other online color-picker I’ve ever worked with: the colors only work if you are only going to look at them online. Our house, however, is actual – not virtual. So Carl took a look at the colors I was picking – all too bright (value¹) as far as he was concerned – and stuck his tongue out.

Rather than argue that through, I decided to wait until we could look at the swatches on site. Both of our first choices would have been more expensive, and we aren’t investing in this kind of aesthetics (value²). There were perfectly good choices that wouldn’t cost extra.

Seagrass it is. With Charcoal Black shingles.
Certainteed's Monogram 46
Seagrass -- Approximately
Certainteed's Landmark Shingles
Charcoal Black -- Pretty Close

Don’t worry, the house won’t really be quite these colors. Probably. Depending on your monitor.

New Construction Videos

I've been taking photographs since June 2013.  I try and take a series of photographs from the same location each time I visit.  There are a number of landmarks I use to position myself -- a rock here, a tree there, a stake in the ground by this corner.  Oh, not just the lot -- the swamp too!  This will allow me to give a historical "time-lapse" of the various views and parts of the build process.  Which will end up in this blog at some point.  In the mean time...

Starting last week, I added a walk-through video from my ipad.  They start on the street and have me walking in the front door and going through all the rooms.  The first two are below.  I'll work with Trish on figuring out the best way to add additional ones.
